In recent years, several European countries have implemented bans on face-covering garments, such as the burqa and niqab. These bans have been met with outstanding support. The rest of Europe, notably Ireland, should also implement similar bans for the following reasons:

1. Public Safety and Security
One of the primary arguments put forth in favor of these bans is that of public safety and security. Face-covering garments make it difficult to identify individuals, which poses a serious security risk. In an era where security is of paramount importance, the ability to identify individuals is crucial.

2. Societal Integration and Communication
Another argument centers on societal integration and communication. Face-covering garments hinder interpersonal communication and prevent the integration of minority groups into the broader society. In Denmark, for instance, the Ministry of Justice stated that the burqa and niqab were not “compatible with the values and sense of community in Danish society”. This sentiment could be echoed in other European societies that value open communication and integration.

3. Women’s Rights
The ban also helps to protect women’s rights. Face-covering garments are a symbol of the oppression of women and banning them promote gender equality. In the large majority of cases, women are forced to cover their faces and their freedom of dressing the way they want is taken away. By banning these garments, countries can take a stand against this form of oppression and promote the empowerment of women.

4. Majority Sentiment
Finally, the ban reflects the sentiment of the majority of the population. For example, in Denmark, 62% of the population supported a ban on the niqab and burqa according to an opinion poll. If the majority of citizens in other European countries, including Ireland, hold similar views, it would be democratic for the governments to consider their opinions.
